Lucerne & surrounding area Cultivated and relaxed

Lucerne, said to be the “most beautiful city in Switzerland”, is picturesquely situated on Lake Lucerne, with an impressive mountain panorama in the background. The city is a promising destination thanks to its sights, attractive shopping and unique location. A gondola ride up one of Lucerne's local mountains, Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi, or a steamboat trip on the ramified Lake Lucerne is a must.

Lucerne Highlights

Explore the old town with its historic, frescoed houses, picturesque squares and the covered, medieval Kapellbrücke, the oldest wooden bridge in Europe, famous for its gable paintings. Visit the Rosengart Collection Museum, known for its paintings by Picasso, and the Tribschen country house, where Richard Wagner lived for several years and completed his operas “Die Meistersinger” and “Siegfried”. Lucerne is also a city of music and festivals: the renowned Lucerne Festival brings together classical music stars from all over the world every year, the Lucerne Blues Festival, which takes place in November, has established itself as one of the most important blues festivals in Europe and at the Lucerne International Organ Festival, outstanding organists demonstrate their skills on the famous, monumental large court organ of the Court Church of St. Leodegar.

Excursion Lake Lucerne & Vitznau

Enjoy a steamboat trip from Lucerne to Vitznau on beautiful Lake Lucerne. The picturesque drive with views of the impressive landscape is a must for all visitors to Lucerne. The old mountain village of Vitznau lies in an idyllic location directly on the lake. If you are interested you can visit the Vitznau artillery fortress, which was hewn into the mountain during the Second World War and was kept top secret for decades. Today, Swiss Army soldiers guide visitors through the complex with its 500 m of tunnels, gigantic ammunition store, cannon positions, a power station, workshops and an operations room.

Excursion Mount Rigi

From Lucerne a boat will take you across the lake to Vitznau, where you will catch the Mount Rigi Cog Railway. Europe’s oldest cogwheel train has been transporting guests up the mountain since 1871. During the 30-minute ascent to almost 1,800 m above sea level, you will enjoy spectacular views over the lake landscape, traditional farms, and colorful wildflower meadows. From the summit of the Rigi, Switzerland's most famous panoramic mountain, a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view awaits.
